Match report by Simon Martin:
They came to bury the seconds, not praise them. In the end, it was anything but a walkover!
The first meeting between the two Loughborough sides in the league was a tense affair. Both had their flags up at the back of the hall, and both had their mascots.
The order of weapons was Foil, Sabre and Epee. In the foil, it all looked certain when Treadway of the firsts and Chu of the seconds started the final match, the score being 37 – 16. An incredible 23 points later, and the swift David Chu had made a comeback of epic proportions, winning the final match 15-8 and ending the foil 45-31.
The seconds needed to break a Tank, sink a Battleship and dethrone Juan Pablo the VI of Spain in the sabre. In the end, Sabre was the one saided affair that won the match for the 1sts. Four 5-0 wins for the firsts put them into a 45 point lead going into the Epee, the final score being 45-14.
The epee was a very different affair, remaining much closer between matches than the previous two weapons. There were some moments of high tension that made the epee matches entertaining! The most anticipated match was between the two team captains, Monyard and Martin. The team scores started at 20-16 for this match. After some exhilarating swordplay, the match ended 25-24, Simon Martin winning that matchup 8-5 before bowing out to allow Paul to fence in his final match. Jake Desmond was also subbed in for Treadway for his final match of the day. The final score was 45-35, and the final match
score was 135-80.
Special mentions for highest indicators on the firsts go to Jon Gray (foil), Jake and Tank (Sabre, equal) and Matthew Eplett (Epee). For the opposition, special mentions to David Chu (man of the match with most points scored for a single weapon, Foil), and Simon Martin (highest indicators for seconds in Sabre and Epee).

On Wednesday, both the mens 1st and 2nd were in action. The 1st away to Nottingham 1st, and the 2nds to Cambridge 2nd.
The 1sts lost a hard fought encounter, with a final score of 125-102.
The 2nds went down to Cambridge, who put out a far stronger side than the one that had travelled to face the 1sts just a week earlier.
Report
It was a severely changed team from Nottingham that started against
Cambridge, with both Chu and Sturman unwell and unable to play. Starting
with Sabre, Simon, Jezz and Bosh scored fifteen points total to lose the
weapon. In the foil, a similar scenario unfolded for the foilists of Bosh,
Jezz and Nick, although the game was tinged with unpleasantness as several
poor decisons were given by an inexperienced Cambridge fencer.
The Epee was a much closer affair, despite Loughborough having already lost
the match, a fight back from Messers Bosh, Paul and Martin secured 74
points to 135.
Special mentions to Messers Jezz, Simon and Bosh for having the highest
indicators in Foil, Sabre and Epee respectively.

Yesterday (Wednesday 14th October), both the men’s 1st and 2nd teams were in action, away to Warwick 1st and Nottingham 2nd respectively.
The 1st team recorded an emphatic win, finishing with a score of 135-51.
The sabre team, up first, set an impressive marker with a victory of 45-16, which saw Martyn Sewell top scoring with an indicator of +12.
The foil team followed, and battled bravely to match the sabre team efforts, falling at the final hurdle to walk away with an impressive score of 45-17. Sam Treadway led the way with an impressive indicator of +17.
Finally, the epeeists had their turn, and completed the victory with a score of 45-18.
This result certainly lays down a strong, impressive marker for the coming season, revealing the strength of the Lufbra team.
The 2nd team were in action away to Nottingham 2nd, in a match played out on the Sutton Bonnington campus.
In what proved to be a closely fought encounter, Lufbra emerged victorious, with a final score of 131-126.
Another impressive result, illustrating the considerable strength in depth possessed by Lufbra.
More details will follow.
Update
Match report for 2nds:
Loughborough won a close knit game in which neither side had enough foils to
actually fence with…after some quick fixing on both sides, Chu, Bosh and
Bennett racked up some quick fire points putting Loughborough in front. The
Sabre, weakest of the three, was left down to Bosh, Neil and Simon. Bosh was
the strongest sabreur, scoring nine points in one match to bring the team
back level. In the Epee it started badly, but Bosh, Aaron and Simon brought
it back for Loughborough to win convincing by the end of the day’s play.
Special mentions to Dave, Bosh and Neil for having the highest indicators
in Foil, Epee and sabre respectively.

Men’s team Trials will be held on Monday 5th October, starting at 6pm in the Dance Studio. This is the first Monday training session after the Fresher’s Bazaar.
The purpose of the trials is to aid the captains in team selection, especially early in the season where they may be unfamiliar with everyone’s abilities. Results of the trials are not definitive, however. The captains have the final say on team selection.
Note: These are trials only for the men’s teams
Details on format, etc. will follow later.
Please see the calendar on the website homepage for more information on important dates coming up.

Like the title says, the new season fixtures have been released.
Men’s 1sts start with an away match at Warwick; 2nds away Nottingham 2nds. Both on 14th October.
The women start off at home to Oxford 2nds, on 28th October.
Looks like there’s been a change to the league structure in the men’s Midlands Conference, with the introduction of a 2A division. This introduces the possibility of relegation from the current league. Clearly, that’s not on the cards for mighty mighty Lufbra!
